Maleficent Costume - A Closer Look
When it comes to Disney villains, none are more iconic than Maleficent. The mistress of evil has the power to curse, hypnotize and destroy, but she also possesses a menacing beauty that's impossible to ignore. Creating her character's costumes in the live-action sequel Maleficent Costume was no easy feat for costume designer Ellen Mirojnick (The Greatest Showman, Behind the Candelabra). She oversaw the design of a wide array of gowns for three strong, vastly different women at the film's center: Queen Aurora (Elle Fanning), leader of the fey kingdom of the Moors; Queen Ingrith (Michelle Pfeiffer), leader of the more cosmopolitan kingdom of Ulstead; and, of course, the vengeful Maleficent herself played by Angelina Jolie.
Mirojnick's goal was to create a collection of gowns that reflected the various stages of Maleficent's life as well as her personality and evolution, all while remaining true to the style established in the animated original. For the film's opening sequence, she chose to introduce the character wearing a blue dress made of hand pleated China silk with large "bat wing" sleeves that echoed the silhouette of her original cartoon costume.
As the movie progresses and Maleficent becomes more vengeful, she begins to fly and wears a cloak of green-ish silk that's layered with rooster and dyed hen feathers to mimic the wings of the forest creatures she protects. For the battle sequences, she wore a series of embroidered, sculptural, armor-like pieces with animal skeleton rings and claw bracelets, along with accessories of fur, leather and bones.
A key component of Maleficent's look was her horns, which were created by special effects makeup artist Rick Baker using lightweight resin and attached with magnets so that they could be removed between takes. In addition to her horns and wings, she also wore a collar of leaves and flowers made from black-dyed silk and molded into shapes resembling lizard tongues and teeth.
