While they look very like real-life Axolotls', the blue Axolotls weren't created from actual Axolotls. They are based in part on Mudkip a fictional axolotl creature. Although they look like grayish creatures with darker spots, there isn't a shiny ring to their eyes like real-life ampolotls.

Blue axolotls are not able to produce iridophores like the real-life axolotl. Iridophores can be described as chromophores in which light is reflected.
