RUSALNAIA (Sharron Kraus, Ex reverie)
++ (Psych-folk / Camera Obscura / USA) ++
http://www.myspace.com/rusalnaia
Philly-based psychedelic-renaissance-folky duo Rusalnaia are Sharron Kraus and Gillian Chadwick and on their myspace page they say their music "sounds like Gypsies in Bohemia, smoking opium and drinking ginger tea." Sharron Kraus is a singer/musician/songwriter whose music is rooted in the folk traditions of England and Appalachia. Her first two solo albums were released on Camera Obscura and she just released her third album The Fox's Wedding on Durtro Records. Gillian Chadwick is the force behind glam rockers Ex Reverie and in addition to Rusalnaia and Ex Reverie, she also plays lead guitar in the Philly based dance-prog outfit Golden Ball, and is one-half of the Black Sabbath-tinged duo Woodwose.
Kraus and Chadwick met as neighbours in Fishtown, became friends and began collaborating together. Their self-titled album was recorded at Hexham Head Studios in Philadelphia, engineered by Greg Weeks (Espers, The Valerie Project). The duo use dulcimers, guitars, pennywhistles, goat's nail shakers and vintage 70's synths...

ELEPHANT MICAH
++ (Lofi-folk / Time Lag / USA) ++
http://www.elephantmicah.com
Elephant Micah is the stage name of Joe O'Connell of the small town of Pekin, Indiana. He is a prolific songwriter, having self-released numerous albums and Eps over the course of the last seven years. If I were forced to categorize his music, I would go with Americana as his songs have many of the accoutrements of alt-country and folk music, including ample use of the banjo. Elephant Micah has said in interviews that he would like to categorize himself as a recordist, a term he coined to describe his method of writing and developing his music through constant recording. His albums are often based around a concept, and Hindu Windmills is about "the wheel of human suffering."
(...) Elephant Micah is the best musical artist going today as far as I'm concerned, but because he is not signed to a large label, he does not receive the support that far lesser talents receive. I encourage everyone to visit his website and support him to the best of your ability. There are free downloads of a few out-of-print Elephant Micah albums there as well as a link to send him any amount of money you choose through PayPal.
